With recent advancements in artificial intelligence, machines have been developing skills that rival those of humans. And the allure of using robots in place of humans continues to grow in the face of our modern-day hustle culture demanding we get things done faster.
While we love robots and AI (one of the Clever Lucy co-founders worked with autonomous robots in a past life at Carnegie Mellon), they may not offer a better replacement for human-generated work in certain industries.
We believe that relying on human experience offers greater possibilities for creative work–and marketing most certainly requires an innovative and creative mind. Not a robot churning out content.
But are we right?
The Human vs. AI Copywriting Tool Experiment
Can AI engines produce the same high-quality work as a creative copywriter? We decided to put this question to the test and pit human copywriters against AI engines in a copywriting showdown.
In this experiment, we will determine how well AI copywriting engines perform when tasked with writing copy for one of Clever Lucy’s blogs. To test this, we took a prompt used in a previous post, “Top 10 Productivity Tools to Work Smarter, Not Harder,” and ran it through five different AI copywriting engines:
Who will win in the human vs. machine copywriting battle?
The AI-Generated Intro Paragraphs
Below are each of the introductory paragraphs produced by the five copywriting engines. No edits. No changes. Let’s look at what the robots wrote.

And Here’s What Our Human Copywriter Wrote
It’s the start of the day. You wake up, drive to the office (or walk down the hall), and feel ready to tackle the day. You pour yourself a cup of coffee, write a to-do list, and prepare to put your head down and get to work. And then 5:00 rolls around. You look back at your to-do list, and you’ve hardly made a dent.
Sound familiar? Do you often feel you never have enough time to finish everything? As a leader, your time and energy are finite resources, and you need to use them wisely to ensure you’re as productive as possible.
Fortunately, there are plenty of great tools to help take care of the monotonous or repetitive tasks of your business so you can focus on what matters – your clients, your staff, and your strategic goals.
Human vs. Machine: The Results
So, what do you think? When it comes to copywriting, there’s no substitute for the human touch, right?
To be fair, the copywriting engines produced better results than we expected. Most introductions had complete sentences, so we must give credit where credit is due. However, we did notice a few things that were… not so great.
The machine-written intros lacked creativity across the board. Some had improper grammar, one didn’t even punctuate the first word of a sentence, and others were a bit repetitive or monotonous.
The biggest downfall? The AI robot writers didn’t ever appeal to the human experience.
Painting a picture of a consumer’s pain point and how you can solve it hooks your audience and helps convert leads into sales. The AI engines gave a valiant effort but came up short in the empathy department.
On the other hand, our human copywriter stepped into our target audience’s shoes, addressed their pain point, and laid out a solution. It’s clear that humans are still the superior species when it comes to copywriting.
Robots can’t tap into the human experience.
Only humans can.
Marketing isn’t only about driving sales; it’s about people too. That’s why you should always count on a human to write copy that will resonate with your audience.
